BOROUGH COUNCIL.

REPORTS. • I The following reports will be presented at the meeting of the Borough Council to-night:— ELECTRICAL' ENGINEER'S REPORT. Powerhouse. —Twice during the past • winter the machines had all the load that they could carry. Now that the days are getting longer the load Is not quite ho heavy, and, provided we have no accident, we should be able to meet all requirements for the next few months. The cottage at the waterworks has been wired and was connected last week. The cottage at abattoirs will probably be connected this week. Advices are to hand that some of the poles on order .have arrived at Wellington and may arrive here by any steameT now. It will be advisable very shortly to extend the powerhouse building to receive the machinery now on order. Some alterations to the tail race will bo necessary. I am getting out particulars for the above work. Machine foundations will ha.ve to be put down, but nothing can be done in regard to tohis until we. get the working drawings from the makers of the machinery. ABATTOIR REPORT. During July there were slaughtered for local consumption:—s7 cows, 111 bullocks, 2 calves, 595 sheep, 1 hunb and 122 pigs. Compared with July ; last year they shown an increase of 7 ' [ cattle, 25 sheep, and a decrease of 3 [ calves, 8 lambs and oft pigs. Four cattle, 2 sheep and 17 pigs were con- \ demned. Twenty-three cows, 1 bullock ', and I bull were slaughtered for export, of which 7 cows were condemned. Total fees for month amount to £lll 15s Gd; total rents for month amount to £3 ' 5s 6d. Total £lls Is. A decrease of J 19s. I have had the chilling room and niaeliinery overhauled and repaired, ; all ready for starting freezing, but . Mr. Sole informs me that they are now , going to put the pigs in at Moturoa. ■■ The post of grubbing No. 2 paddock £ Was £l6 12s. I went over the "flat," ! and I find there is a lot of stone there, and at places the ;; grubbing would be very slow, as it would be impossible for ' | the''men to keep their tools sharp. I estimate that it woijld cost about £69 '•! to clear the gorse and blackberry. If it is done by day labor, I think the • Council should supply grubbers, as the i; , stones -will be very hard on these. ' j • | RESERVES COMMITTEE. 1 The Reserves Committee met on Au-1 gust 2.
