Before it disbanded, the Interstate Labor Conference took the initial steps to create a central authority representing the industrial unions of the Commonwealth to deal with disputes likely to involve other unions than the one in which the dispute originates. A HITCH AT MACK AY. Brisbane, August 17. A hitch occurred in the sugar dispute settlement. The waterside workers at Mackay declined to work with non-unionists, and notified that unless non-unionist's were removed by noon to-day work at the wharves would cease.
LUMPERS REFUSE DUTY. Received 18, 12.50 a.m. Brisbane, August 17. Contrary to the secretary's advice, the waterside workers refused to work, owing to the presence of non-unionists, whom the company declined to withdraw. A conference is being arranged.
