COOKS AND WAITERS' DISPUTE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Mr. Halley presided over the Conciliation Council in the Wellington cooks and waiters' dispute to-day. An amicable agreement was ultimately come to 011 all points at issue. The terms in the main are in keeping with the award conditions existing in Wellington and the main centres. The matter will be formally submitted to the Arbitration Court to be converted into an award, operative in the boroughs of Palmerston and Wanganui. In the main the agreement is on a par with award conditions existent in the four centres. DRIED MILK FOR DR. MAWSON. Palmerston North, List Xight. Nathans are sending their large order for dried milk for Dr. Mawsori's Antarctic expedition to Melbourne in fifty-pound tins. There Dr. Mawson has a compressing plant, and intends to convert the dried milk into tabloids, so that tliey will be most readily portable on tlio various expeditions over the ice and to the Pole. AGGRAVATED ASSAULT. Wellington Last Night. At the Magistrate's Court to-day James Burns, a middle-aged man, was found guiltv of aggravated assault on an eight years old girl at Nelson, and was sentenced to two months' imprisonment. CHRISTCHURCH FIRE BOARD. Christchurch, Last Night. The Christchurch Fire Board to-night decided to inform the Palmerston North Board, in reply to the last mentioned Board's enquiry, that it considered it undesirable to hold a conference of fire boards t'his year, owing t'> I lie rliortness of the session, but that a conference might be held shortly befors next session. The Board decided to support the Hastings Board's efforts to have the Act amended in the direction of fire boards being enabled to borrow under the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act. NEXT SOUTH ISLAND BAND CONTEST. Christchurch, List Night. At a public meeting to-night it was decided that the next contest of the South Island Rinds Association be held at Christchurch during November next. A strong committee was elected to make the necessary arrangements. A sum of £BO was guaranteed in the room towards the expenses. CHRISTCHURCH BY-ELECTION. Christchurch, Last Night. The candidates for Christeliurch North (Mr. J. D. Hall and the Rev. L. M. Isitt) gave final addresses to the electors to-night, the meetings being crowded. The poll will be taken to-morrow.
