Important changes are being made in connection with the management of the Union Steam Ship Company, which involve the promotion of Mr. David Mills to the management of the Sydney office.
CONTROL OF THE PACIFIC. Melbourne, August 16. Mr. Fisher states that while in England 1 he urged that Australia should be made the predominant factor in the Pacific. No definite arrangements were made, but he gathered the impression that his representations were favorably received. The question of some of the Pacific islands being taken over by Australia would become pressing in the future, but so far had not been considered a Government question.
BANDS AS AN INCENTIVE TO RIOTS. Sydney, August 16.
During a discussion in the Citv Council on the question of supplying band music in the City parks, Alderman Meagher argued that the disgraceful scenes at football matches were due entirely to the music, which enraged the public and caused them to riot.
BRITISH EMIGRANTS. Melbourne, August 16. An officer, recently in charge of immigration work in London, states that if arrangements can be made to bring them out to Australia, there will be no difficulty in securing 50,000 immigrants in this year.
PROTEST AGAINST A MINISTER. Melbourne, August 10. The council of the Victorian Employers' Federation adopted a protest against the Federal Attorney-General, as president of the Waterside Workers' Federation, directing its members to refuse to handle non-union sugar, as such action tended to cause a general strike in contempt of the Arbitration Act, which he, as Attorney-General, should endeavor to uphold.
