Lord Islington opened the proceedings. His Excellency said lie was in fullest sympathy with tlie work of agricultural societies, and very valuable results could be obtained from the employment of scientific experts in agriculture, combined with the practical experience of agriculturists. He described the working oif the Central Chamber of Agriculture at Home, and said what most impressed him about that institution was the fact that it had always kept itself distinct as an organisation from party political controversy. It was an impartial medium and could acquire a prompt response from the Government. His Excellency concluded with a warm tribute to the work of tiie agricultural societies in New Zealand and to the reception accorded him in different parts of the country.
