LABOR TROUBLES IN AUSTRALIA
SETTLEMENT ARRIVED AT. WORK TO BE RESUMED. By Cable —Press Association—Copyright. Brisbane, August 15. The conference sat till midnight. The Minister of Works then announced to the press representatives that the negotiations had concluded, and that a form of agreement had been drafted and approved, and would be completed at noon to-day. It is understood that the settlement is on the basis of a 48 hours week, overtime to be paid only after nine hours. The settlement covers not only the sugar dispute, but any possibility of a dispute in the various callings represented by the delegates to the conference. Field work is not touched in the agreement, the delegates having withdrawn their demands.
The delegates gave an undertaking that work Bhould immediately be resumed.
SOME DEMANDS CONCEDED. Brisbane, August IS. The strike is settled. It is agreed that a 48 hours week shall be worked, with a minimum of 30s, overtime to be paid for at the rate of time and a, quarter over a nine hours' day.
THE ADOPTED TERMS. GENERAL SATISFACTION*. Received 15, 9.25 p.m. Brisbane, August 15. Work resumes forthwith. The terms of agreement provide for 30s and keep; overtime rate, time and a quarter; 48 hours a week; and no vindictive spirit to be shown towards the strikers. General satisfaction is expressed at the settlement. The conference met at noon. Shortly afterwards the press were admitted and handed the agreement. In addition to the terms cabled, it was agreed that it be a recommendation to employers and employees in the various districts to meet and endeavor to arrange for a mutually satisfactory agreement for next season,' anil as far as possible the conditions to be made uni-i form throughout the State. SUPPORT FOR LITHGOW STRIKERS. Received IG, 12.55 p.m! Sydney, Last Night. The secretary of the Labor Council declares that now the sugar strike is settled the whole forces of organised labor will be directed against the iron firm, Hoskins, of Lithgow, on behalf of the strikers.
