V Palmereton N., Last Night. A military court, consisting of Colonel Pringle and Captains White and Powles, heard evidence this evening regarding the accident to Staff Sergeant-Major Browning. During the military camp he wais struck on the chin by a football after a match at the camp, and has been in the hospital ever since. The SergeantMajor was not a participant in- the match.
COOKS? AND WAITERS' DISPUTE. Palmcrston X., Last Night, The Conciliation Commission sits here to-morroxv under Mr. Ha Hey in the cooks' and waiters' dispute, 'when the Palmerston and Wanganui hotelkeepers and others will be represented. Gigborne, Hastings and Napier employers have already arrived at an agreement with the employees, and Mr. Carey, secretary of the union, considers there is every probability of the Wanganui and Palmerston employers falling into line. WOULD YOU ACCEPT A BARONETCY? Masterton, August 13. "Would yoti accept a baronetcy?" was a; question put to Mr. Massey inMasterton on Saturday evening. At first the Leader of the Opposition replied with assumed sadness that no one had offered him a baronetcy. Th«n he stated seriously that he saw no harm in a man accepting a title for the term of his life as a reward for meritorious public service, but he drew the line at that. He did not believe in hereditary titles.
