The Bishop of. Auckland will visit the Taranaki Archdeaconry from Ist' to 26th September. A London cable states that General Booth ha 9 sailed from Southampton. He is restored to health.
Mr; T. Humphries, ex-Surveyor-CrcnCTal and now president of the New Zetland Institute was a passenger to New Plymouth by Friday night's mail train to hold a conference with local surveyors. At Manchester, on the nth inst., Miss Constance Mary Corkill, eldest daughter of Mr. F. P. Corkill, of New Plymouth, was married'to Mr. Thomas H. Horrax, second son of the late John Horrox, of Karori, Wellington.
Sir .Tairics Carroll, acting-Prime Minister, is to be entertained by his Wellington friends on the occasion of his fifty - I fourth birthday to-,day week in Sydney street schoolroom, when opportunity will he taken to present him with an illuminated address and to congratulate bun upon his knighthood.
Mr. J. B.' Thomson, a well-known resident of Dunedin, died very suddenly on Friday afternoon (says a Press Association telegram), lie was about town in the morning, but passed away as the result, of heart failure. He arrived in the Dominion in 1805, and was Mayor of Dmiedin in 1882. He was 71 years of age.
The funeral of the late Mr. Jonathan Dixon, -district manager for tin; Westport Coal Company, took place yesterday, and was one of the largest seen in the district, there, .being present a large ' representation of miners, members of local bodies, heads -of local Government departments, and shipping, and a large following of the general public.—Westport wire..
The names of Messrs. W. Amibury, W. L. Newman, J. B. Roy, and the deputyMayor, Mr. G. W. Browne, are being mentioned in connection with the N*w Plymouth mayoralty. 'Die Borough Council has the power, of course, to elect one of its own' members to the mayoral chair. For instance, in Christchui'ch the other day, Mr. J. J. Dougall. the deputv-Mavor. was elected to succeed Mr. t. E.'Tavlor.
Mr. Joseph Goodal), aged 73 years, (lied at Kaikoura last week. For many years he was a resident of that town. He was the first police officer, and afterwards was wharfinger and harbormaster for many years. Latterly he has been in failing health. He was a brother-in-law to Mr. J. Duncan, M.P., his wife predeceasing him some years ago. lie leaves a family of seven—three daughters and four sons.
Mr. David Sandilands. who has been well known in Oamaru for many years, passed away at his residence at the end of last week at the age of 79 years. Before going to Oamaru Mr. Sandilands was in business in Scotland as a contracting carpenter and joiner, and followed the same occupation in Oamaru. Tt is many years since, the deceased arrived in Oamaru, but he broke the continuity of his stay there by a residence in Tasmania for several years. . Mr. Sandilands was a keen politician, and took an interest in both general and local affairs.
