CYCLING.

WAITARA ROAD RACE. The road race from Waitara to Inglewood to New Plymouth, thence back to Waitara. a distance of about 35 miles, took place yesterday under ideal cycling conditions. The roads were in good order, and the weather was splendid, being cool and without any appreciable breeze. This race was looked upon as giving a line to go upon in regard to the chances of many of the competitors in next week's big event. Over forty faced the starter, and that the men were in good condition was evidenced by the number who finished and the time that was put up.

P. o*Shea, of Christchurcli, put up the fastest time, doing the distance in lhr. 39min. 36sec. He was on the 4min mark. H. Henderson, of Palmerston North, who started off the same mark, secured second fastest thne, with lhr. 39min. 37sec. A. B. L. Smith, Christchurch (scr.), secured third fastest time, lhr. 41min. 3sec.

R. Lawrence fell early in the race, and brought down E. Stoddart, who remounted. 0. Neilson had only got about a mile on his journey when his tyre blew off, whilst G. Souchman reached Lepperton. L. H. Smith, a young local rider, off the 20min. mark, was leading four miles from home, when cramp robbed him of a certain place. The prizes were: First £ls, second £5, third £2 10s; and a medal for fastest time. The places were filled by:

W. D. Roebuck, New Plymouth (20 min. handicap), lhr. 49min. (riding time), first.
