DISTRICT NEWS.
(Frl m Our Own Correspondent*). WAITARA ROAD. A concert promoted by the committee of the Waitara West couTt in the districts competition at the recent show took place, in the Huirangi ,Hall on Thursday last, and was fairly -well attended. Mr. Robert Tumbull, chairman of the committee, was in the chair, and briefly stated the object of the concert, the net proceeds to go to the Taranaki Agricultural Society's hall fund. Mr. Tumbull said that the Waitara West people were the first to take up the matter of making a district court in the late show, and he thought was the first also to help to raise funds by the aid of a public entertainment to their hall fund, mentioning that the society was of material benefit to the individual farmer, and an agricultural hall would be both beneficial to town and country alike. The following contributed to. the programme: —Pianoforte solo, Mi«s Badlcy; song, "We Two," Miss May .Tone-- (encored); song, "Idle Words," : !r>. Opcashaw; recitation, Mr. H, .li.il; song, "Jessie's Dream," Miss Tumbull; song, "Three for Jack,"(Mr. W. J. Smith (encored); song, Mrs. Hoby; song, "My Old Shako," Mr. E. Beckibessinger (encored); song, "Lilacs," Miss Badley; recitation, "Snake-bite Antidote," Mr. B. Luke; song, "Daddy," Miss Olive Jones; song, "Mona," Mr. Davis (encored); song, "Deathless Army," Mr. Mcßoth; song, Mr. W. J. Smith; song, Miss M. Jones; song, Mr. E, Beckfliessiuger; duct, "Larboard Watch," Mrs lloby and Miss Tumbull. Mr. R. Farmer gave several humorous songs and monologues in his usual able manner, the whole programme . being much appreciated by the audience. Miss Badley, of Waitara, played the accompaniments during the evening in a first-class manner. The chairman thanked the auidence fbr the attendance, and moved a very hearty vote of thanks to all the performers, especially those coming from a distance. Mr. G. V. Tate made a few remarks re the various winter shows, during which he said that it spoke well for this end of Taranaki when the majority of prizes in vegetables and roots came to this end, both at Palmcrston and Ilawera winter shows.
As usual the ladies provided a firstclass supper, after which the floor was cleared for the usual dance.
URENUI. A most successful complimentary smoke concert to Mr. Julian took place in the hall on Monday evening. Over 80 persons sat down to the sumptuous spread, Mr. C. N. Rowe occupied the chair and Mr. G. Pope the vice-chair. A lengthy toast list was discussed. Mr. G. Pope, in a neat little speech, proposed Mr. Julian's health, and expressed hie pleasure at seeing so m,any happy faces present to say farewell to such a good settler as Mr. Julian, who would be greatly missed in connection with all sorts of sports in the district and as a member of the Clifton County Council. They could ill afford to lose him. The toast was drunk with musical honors. Mr. H. Halcombe proposed the toast of the Julian family in a very appropriate speech. Mr. Julian responded for the kind way in which those present had drunk the health of his family. Songs were sung at intervals by Messrs Farquhar, Bert-rand, Bird'onj;. Shiles, Stratton and J. George. A recitation was given by Mr. Mitchell. Mr. A. McLennan supplied the supper, for which he deserves great credit . The whole affair was. most successful, and terminated by the company singing "Auld Lang Syne" at 12.30 a.m.'
