REMITS FROM CLIFTON COUNTY COUNCIL."' '■■• . On Friday at the Clifton County Council's meeting, ji letter was received from the Secretary'of the County Councils' Association notifying that a conference would be held in Wellington on August 22, and that all remits must be forwarded by August 10. The Council resolved to submit the following remits for consideration:— (1) That the Government subsidy on local bodies' rates under the Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act, 1908, be increased, and in equity such subsidies should be graduated so' as to afford the most assistance to local bodies whose needs were greatest, and who levy a high rate to meet their requirement's. (2) That a larger subsidy be granted to those local bodies who axe not assisted by a railway through the district. (3) That this Council urges the Association to take up the question of having the law relating to the rating of native lands amended in the direction of making the collection of rates from these lands by the local bodies more workable than they wore at present. (4) That this Council protests against any alteration of the county franchise that deprive ratepayers of tlieir present voting power or extend the franchise to non-ratepayers. ~.'. u*
