CLIFTON (11) v. STAB (6).
The match between Clifton and Star, which was played' on the Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoon in aid of the Way Benefit Fund, did not attract a very large crowd. Those present, however, were treated to a very interesting contest in which there was considerable open play, both sides using their backs frequently. Neither team was up to full strength, Crowley and Cain being notable absentees from the green and gold pack, whilst Dewar was unable to play in the second spell for the blacks. Stars had, if anything, the better of the first spell, bnt"ciifton had the advantage during the second half. Goodwill pleased the spectators with his fine, dashing, corkscrew runs, and well deserved his fcrv. Mr. A. Smart refereed,
From the kick-off Stars attacked, and a passing rush between Main, Hill and G. Loveridge saw the greens in danger. George made a nice kick and relieved. A little later Goudie nearly got over, but Oolman stopped him finely, and a scrum ensued. A wild pass by Main quickly changed the scene. Eggleston kicked the ball, and, following up fast, gathered it up, and, outpacing the opposition, scored. George failed to, convert. A little later George gave a pass to Colmon, who was well grassed by McAlluan, and almost immediately Goodwin was collared by Whitaker when a score as the result of a fiHe passing bout between Oolman, .Eggleston, Tate (2) and himself looked imminent. From a free kick Hill lined at half-way. Wainwright and Dewar were next responsible for some good play, and Clifton weTe called to defend. The greens were getting the ball from the scrum, and this enabled Colm'an to kick to safety. From a mark Hawkins had a shot, which fell short. From the kick out, the ball came to Hill, who ran and kicked to Goudie. Wainwright followed up fast, but a knock-on spoilt a score. From the scrum Clifton forwards pressed right down the field and dver the line, where Main secured, but was held up from forcing. Three or four Cliftonites dived for the ball, but missed, and the dead'ball line gave relief.; Dewar, Hawkins, Wood and Okey were prominent in a forward rush, but the green backs' came again, and play remained in the blacks' 25 for a few moments. Goudie, with a nice kick, found the line, and from the throw-in Dewar, Haggenscn and Hawkins headedl an irresistible rush, and Eggleston- just got round in time to force—obstruction, however, helping him some. A long kick by Hill sa.w the blacks attack, and a long pass McAllum to" Loveridge found the (latter checked right on the line;, .An j infringement gave Hawkins another unsuccessful attempt to goal. The blacks'were now holding their own, but the greens' defence was sound. Hicks, Thomas- and Fairlie were conspicuous in a rush that carried play to neutral territory, from which Goudie removed it and the ball found touch-in- ] goal. A fine run by Hill was spoilt by his waiting! too long to pass, and Fuirlie, intercepting, got Clifton out of danger. A forward; rush by Hawkins and Okey saw George just able to save. The blacks were making the game open, and Hawkins made a clever mark, but his shot at'goal was poor. Fast play ensued, ncithjer side having much advantage until Hall made a nice run and a score looked likely had he passed. He hung on till he was collared, and the chance went. Half-time went with no further scota On resuming, Clifton pressed, and Crockett was lucky to save by throwing out at -the corner flag. From the throwin Goudie broke away, and some good following up was done by Badley, Hawkins and McAllum, and a line-out close to the green goal line followed. The next few moments were confined principally to jmtirks, ,from one of which Hill dirop-ikicked a fine goal .and equalised the scores. This livened up the greens, and a hot rush, covered much ground. Gjeorge centred, but McAllum secured and kicked out at half-way. The green forwards came again and smothered. Crockett just on the line. From a free kick, Hill marked under the goal, but failed <to find the line. Eggleston secured, bfeat several men, and crosskicked,.,a. movement that resulted in Fairlie scoring. George .failed to goal. Uninteresting play followed until Tate secured and: passed to his brother, who handed on ■ to; Colpian. The latter dodged,'beat) a, lot of the opposition, and passed across to. Tate, who was just collared on the line. Soon after Goodwin got the ;ba,ll, and corkscrewed clean through! "tile! blacks, scoring a fine try. George ■'added the major points. From the kick, out the blacks got over the half-way line, whore they were given a free kiek- : ior an infringement, and Hill dropped another fine goal. Cohnan. Goodwin and Co. attacked again, and the former passed nicely to Tate, whoi was [gamely by Crockett. Goodwin gathered the ball up and was only ■chocked W [he• combined efforts of McAllum -anil- Whitaker. A free kick to Clifton 'was rushed down by the blacks, but the check was only temporary, as Tate -put/iri {a strong run, being collared in time by Piicher, and Loveridge did likewise for jGoodwin immediately after. Wood, Okey: and Hawkins relieved the pressure, and' a -lows kick by Hill saw play in Clinton's 25. Shortly n-ftei. CW>ckett folmd touch-in-goal. Stars wore opening up' tjhe game a little and giving Clifton'some; uneasiness until Eggleston intercepted i| pass and carried play to the blacks' 2.1. where Goodwin wia.s again nicely tacklco) iby Ltivcr'ulgo. George had a- shot at goal from a mark, but the ball •fell short. Main, Goudie and Hawkins then took part in a parsing bout that carried play; to the other end, where Hawkins kicked over the line, and a strong (boost by Goodwin found the deadball lino. -Play ended soon after with no further score.
