WAITARA WEST ROAD BOARD

(From Our Own Correspondent. At the monthly meeting of the above board there were present: Mr. ,T. Connett (chairman) and Messrs. French, Hall. Surrey and Turnbull. Correspondence was read from Mr. W. Free complaining of the condition in which the contractors had left the Karaka road; from Clifton County Council, stating that they were unable to give anything towards metalling the hill between Huirangi and the Waitara bridge; from Moa Rond Board, stating that the rates allocated to the Davis road amounted to £C> 18s. and requesting that this Board forward a contribution towards last year's maintenance; fr om Taranaki County Council, offering to put in a culvert at the junction of Waitara and Devon road, provided the Board pay half the cost, and also suggesting that a ranger be appointed to impound stockturned on to the roads, offering to pay half his remuneration; from Mr J WUcock, requesting the Board not to take any more metal from the pit known as Lever.,. and from t)le Valuer-General, notifying that a voucher for payment of subsidy, amounting to £ll3 10s, had been forward to the Treasury—Mr Sarten attended the meeting,'and stated tliat lie had procured the sum pff>o from residents in the Clifton County towards metalling the hill by the Waitara bridge; the clerk to supply Mr. Sarten with form to get signatures.—Mr F Lownsborough waited on the Board re his duties if appointed poundkoeper, stating that he was not prepared to act as ranger Resolved that he be appointed poundkeeper.-Messrs. Tate and Paul attended and requested permission to cart 600 yds of stone over the Karaka road Agreed to, provided they repair the road before starting, keeping the road in order during their contract, and leave it to the satisfactibn of Board's surfaee-man.-The dark was directed to inform the Taranaki County Council that the Board have appointed their surfacemen rangers and find this satisfactory and with regard to the culvert, they' will be agreeable to pay half cost of same - It was decided to ask Mr. Wilcock'to inform the Board what his objections are to their taking gravel from 'his" pit -The Moa Road Board to be requested to furnish a statement of last year's ex penditure on the Davis road, and to be informed that this Board do not admit any legal liability as to upkeep of the road, the contribution beincr purely vol that Haskell had completed his Te 4rei road contract, having put on 160 yards and the upper Te Arei road had been repaired, Messrs, Rollins and Mcßeth assisting. Messrs. Tate and Paul had repaired the Karaka road. The York road bridge requires repairing, and the filling on Cross road by Mr. Landman's requires a few loads of earth." The settiers on Kairau road will clear their rentage if the road-grader is allowed to form the road.-The repairs mentioned in the report were authorised and it was decided U grade the Kairau road as far as funds will permit, when the grader is in the district. The sur faccmen were instructed to repair the Kelly road with the dumped metal and also to test the depth of metal on the roads and report—Accounts amounting to *JO4 were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
