The House of Commons, despite Mr. Masterman's objection to Mr. Matkham's amendment to the Mines Bill, excluding women from working at pitbrows, carried the amendment in committee. A deputation of pitbrow girls have arrived in London to interview Mr. Churchill. NECESSITY FOR WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE. London, August 4. Mr. jTuisterman, replying to the pitbrow girls' deputation, regretted the committee's action. It showed the necessity for women's votes. The question was essentially one for women to decide. Therefore a men's parliament, elected by men, had no right to prohibit women from pitbrow work. He had Mr. Churchill's authority to say that an effort would be made to alter the committee's decision. | STUDYING THE IRISH QUESTION, j Received 4, 10 p.m. London, August 4. The Eighty Club has arranged a representative party, including many Parliamentarians, to visit Ireland in September, to study the Irish question, with a view to the coming Home Rule campaign. A NEW SOCIALIST PARTY. Received 4, 10 p.m. London, August 4. A new Socialist party, called the British Socialist Party, has been formed, with Victor Grayson as the moving spirit. BY-ELECTION. London, August 3. The by-election for the Middleton Division of Lancashire, to fill the vacancy caused by Sir W. R. Adkins' appointment to a recordership, resulted: Sir W. R. Adkins (Liberal), 6863; Professor W. A. S. Hewins (Unionist), 6452. [At the general election the voting was: Adkins 7071, Hewins 6284.]
