PERSONAL.

Sir George llcid and Miss Reid arc returning to London. The death is reported of Mr. Edwin Abbey, the well-known painter. A Sydney wire states that Archdeacon D'Aroy Irvine has bu-n elected to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Canon Jones. The deputy-Mayor, Mr. G. W. Browne, is convening a meeting to 'be held in the Town Hall to-morrow (Thursday) at 7.30 p.m. for the -purpose of making arrangements for a suitable send-off to Mr. W. H. Skinner, who will shortly be removing to another district ■Mrsi T. E. Taylor has asked the Press Association to express the gratitude of herself and family for the sympathy extended; them during the past week. She says sihe would 'haive liked to answer all the .telegrams and messages personally, liut theire have been so many she cannot hope to do so. Words could not express her gratitude. Sir Joseph Ward has cabled from Colombo to Mrs. Taylor his deepest sympathy on the death of her husband. He adds: "Though we often differed, I admired 'his courage and brilliancy." The forthcoming elections promise to be particularly interesting so far as Awarma is concerned (says the Bluff Press). In addition to the candidature of the sitting member for the constituency (Sir Joseph Ward, Bart.) there are likely to be three others in the field, and, strangely enough, all in different interests., We refer to Mr. J. R. Hamilton (Whvton, Oppositionist), Mr. T. Fleming (Invercargill, Independent), and Mr. A. W. Morris (Waikiwi, Labor). Sir Joseph will, of course, stand (ae of yore) in the Government interests, a platform which he has supported so ably for over a quarter of a century.
