HON. T. McKENZIE'S VIEWS. By Telegraph —Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. In the course of his remarks at the opening of the Winter Show yesterday, the Hon. T. Mclvenzie said: "This is an agie of caitch cries, aind therefore it is probably all the more necessary that those who are entrusted with gTeat responsibilities should dive 'beneath the siurface and carefully weigh prospectß and possibilities of the situation. It will be remembered thait I felt the position of the country justified one in throwing light upon, some fallacious deduction# arrived ait by a gentleman occupying what is probably the foremost commercial financial position in New Zealand. At the time of the deliverance of the speech referred to, our pessimists at once seized upon it as an indication that we were in for a period of depression. The reply which I gave has never been challenged. Still less has any attempt been made to reply. I am pleased to note that the most recent papers received from the Homeland show a continuance of .prosperity, and I have already said thait in conjunction with gold this factor is the basis of our being here." t
