THE BRIGGS CASE
ORDER MADE AGAINST THE FATHER. Wellington, Tuesday. Tliomas Wells, a middle-aged man, a teamster employed at a sawmill at To Kiri, Taranaki, was charged before Mt. W. 0. Itiddell, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday <vith being the (father of an illegitimate child of w-hieh Ellen Briggs was the mother. Chief-Detective Broberg prosecuted, and Mr. V. R. Meredith appeared for defendant, who pleaded not guilty. Mr. <T. J. McGrath watched the proceedings on brfieilf of Ellen Brings. Complainant in evidence stated sh« had fanown the defendant for about three years, and had been engaged to him. Ife had paid witness £6 when shfl first came to Wellington (before the child wa.s born), and had later paid A3 to the matron of the receiving home. Mr, McGrath objected to the complainant being cross-examined as to the breaking off of the engagement. His Worship upheld the objection. Defendant then admitted paternity, and was ordered to p«v 7s fld per week towa.nls the support of the child.
