TARANAKI RIFLES' BALL

The decorations of the Theatre Royal | were said to have established a record j on June 5, when the Fire Brigade ball was held. But the decorations committee of the Taranaki Rifles, under Ser-, geant Crutch, can pride themselves on having had the ballroom at the zenith. | of its attractiveness last night. The red, white and blue scolloped festoonings, the wealth of flags of all nations, j pretty Chinese lanterns beautifying the little electric bulbs, and flowers, palms, pictures and mirrors were used with the greatest possible effect, whilst the scarlet uniforms of the military materially enhanced the whole appearance of the room. The floor, too, was in splendid order, and every item of the arrangements was just on a level with the perfect weather which prevailed up till late in the evening. The attendance at the start of the evening was not up to expectations, but it was a night of latecomers, and by about half-past nine o'clock the room was just, comfortably filled with a jolly throng of well-dressed dancers. The music was provided by Mrs. Woods' excellent orchestra of five instruments, and the masters of ceremonies were (Japtain. Fletcher, Lieutenant Marett, Private Arnold, Private Clarke, and Messrs. B. Bullot and Way. The supper arrangements were in the capable hands of Mr. J. C. Legg, of the Hygienic Bakery, and were as good as could possibly be desired. The whole affair, however, was a complete success, and a credit to the energetic secretary, Lieutenant Willis, and his committee. They set a high standard for others to copy.
