PETROLEUM.
LETTER FROM MR. J. D. HENRY. Messrs Watkins and Fox have just received a letter fr6m Mr. J. E. Henry, dated Loiidcln, June 1(1, in which he sayfe:—"Theirc W no 1 heed for me to tell you how greatly 1 appreciate what you and other Mends did for me while I was in New Zealand., It is equally unnecessary for me to say anj thing about the return journey. You know, that I made this as quickly as possible in the interests of the business! which toolc. me out to New Zealand. A few papers riiailed after I returned will have given you some hints as to what I thinfy. about the situation in London. I come hero to find everyone interested in foreign oilfield investments thoroughly downhearted. I was soon able to show- my associates in colonial oil that the times suit our plans in every respect, and the work I am engaged upon promises to result in the finance side of ■ N'c\V' Zealand oil being successful directly people settle down to, business after the holidays. You may take it that we shall have a boom for New Zealand. Two things have naturally 'pleased me; I refer to the putting up of the £2OOQ by my people and the business-like way in which it was decided that the chairman of the Taranaki Petroleum Company should set out for London. You have my assurance that so far as Taranaki business is concerned the future is bright, and this should be good news for you, seeing that no foreign oil group can say the same with respect to projects they have had in hand for .many months. lam in touch with Sir Joseph Ward. Keep me well informed about Taranaki matters. No one can do this so well as yourselves. You cannot speak too hopefully of what is being , done, and the bright prospects in store for Taranaki. (iivo niy kindest regards to all friends."
■ By the last English mail. Mr. A. E. Watkins received a book entitled "Russian Oilfields and the Petroleum Indusli'.V," by John Mityakis. L.L.U. (Atli.), who is recognised as being one of Russia's best-known oil experts. Several references are made to Mr. J. I). Henry in this work. The author states: "The oil industry all over the world, and Russia in particular, owes a, great deal to Mr. Henry, who has done much to re-establish confidence in the possibilities of British enterprise in the Russian Empire. Mi-? Henry is also recognised throughout Russia as being the authority on the oil fuel question, and his great knowledge of the oilfields of the world, all of which he lias visited, must be of immense value to the British oil investor."
