Mr. J. Henderson, M.A., D.Sc., U.L r has been appointed geologist, and Mr. J. A. Bartrum an assistant geologist In the Mines Department. , The Rev. C. F. Askew, at present in charge of the Oarge parish of ingrevr, inYorkshire, England, has been appoint*® • ■vicar of St. Mark's Church, Wellington,, in succession to the Rev, A. M. Johnson: . Mr. B. Simpson was presented on Sat-- * unlay by Mr. Newton King's Stratford" branch staff, \vith which he was associated till recently, with a case of pipes, Mr. Simpson is now at Mr. -King's New Plymouth office. (Mr. Charles. Berkeley, advance manager for Mr. J. C. Williamson's "Jack and the Beanstalk" pantomime, arrivedin town yesterday to make final arrangements for the appearance of the big- , extravaganza on Monday evening next. At Meremere on Sunday last an 014 settler passed away in the person of Mr. , Alexander Birnie at the ripe age of 78' years. Mr. Birnie had been about thirty years in Taranaki, being formerly at Normanby, and previously lived for many years in Canterbury. So far there are six Parliamentary candidates who have offered themselves for election in the Western Maori electorate, so that the excitement promises to be'intense. They are the sitting menlber (Mr. Henare Kaihau), Keri Toke Te Ahu (a cousin of the above), Hanui Tawhaio (brother of Mahuta), Pepene Eketone (who was defeated by some 600 votes at the last election), Rangikatitea (who is another defeated candidate), and Dr. Pomare Tarapepepe (son of Tupu Taingakawa). So far Kaihau and Keri Toke are the favorites.
Mr. E. Snowball was presented yes-tea-day by a group of New Plymouth's master builders with, a very handsome dressing-case and safety shaving outfit. The function took place about noon, and those present were Messrs. R. and F, Coleman, L. Jackson, J, SaJt, G. W. Hartmell, and A. Tomlinson, Mr. R. t'olegian presiding Speeches were made eulogistic of Mr. Snowball's sterling qualities as a manager of u big concern, his unfailing courtesy at all times, hjs readiness to advise and oblige his client*, and his straightforward methods. The ibuilders present had had extensive business dealings with the Sash and Door Company for varying periods, two of tlhein for upwards' of seventeen years, arid had always found his word was hi# bond' in big matters or email. The hope was expressed that his successor would be a man conversant with the requirements of the New 'Plymouth builders and architects, for it was this intimate knowledge of the' local trade that had given Mr. Snowball such a great advantage. The presentation bore a Bilver plate inscribed "Presented to E. (Snowball, Esq., by a few builder friends." .Mr. Snowball heartily thanked his builder friends for their kindness to him during their 'business relations, and for this specially thoughtful present, which he would treasure on account of the excellent spirit which- prompted it He had been fortuniate in, the doss of men with, whom he had had to do business, he said, and fortunate in 'having such excellent support from the factory. In a concern like the Sash and Door Company a manager could hardly do without these. He trusted that on his future visits to New Plymouth he would find his friends well and prospering, and saul he felt that their good wishes and kind thoughts would help him in hw new sphere.
