According to a Sydney paper, a billet haa been found for Mr Peter Bowling, the labor agitator, who lately visitei New Zealand. He had been complaining that none of the colliery proprietors would give him work. He has now been appointed check weighman at Balmata, Where the miners are working at a tonnage rate, and a check weighman is therefore considered necessary to safeguard the interests of the miners. Out of five candidates Mr Bowling easily came first on the ballot, receiving 4ff votes against the other candidates' 11, 9, and 4 respectively. The travelling correspondent of a Wellington paper writes as follows after a ride through the Waiouru districs:— Mr Chapman, of Waiouru, told me that there are a good many wild horses on the run, and on the slopes of Ruapeho. He also told me there are some very gooj creamy ponies on the mountain, and that some time ago, a couple were run in with a mob, broken in, and sold for sixty guineas. They were a perfectly matched pair. Then, some short time afterwards, I was speaking of the matter to a fanner near Raetihi, and he said that he knew the nwin in Auckland who now owns the ponies, and he wants one hundred guineas for them. Every now and then these wild horses repuire thinning out, so a number are shot. The only parts of value arc the manes and taiU.
