ROYAL PICTURES. Full houses greeted the tenth series of pictures presented by the Royal Pictures and Orchestra on Saturday afternoon and evening at the Theatre Royal. The programme ami music were particularly good, and to judge .by the hearty applause that each picture evoked there can be no doubt that every item wasmuch .appreciated, The delightful rendering o£ ; "Zainpa" as an overture by the Royal Orchestra, led the audience to expect a"'good night's amusement. The first picture screened was "A Swiss Country Wedding," a quaint illustration of Swiss life, the music elected for this picture being "Loncgrin" (Bridal march).
"A Gambler of the West" came second on the programme, ami is a fine drama of Western life. '"How the Rug was' Laid" proved to be a comic study of genuine humor. Next came "The English Derby, 1011." This film can easily bo claimed: to be the finest race picture ever taken. It is crammed full of interesting events at Epsom on Derby Day. ''Hetman Nicolaicff," a new type of drama, that retains interest throughout. is> a splendidly colored film by the Russian Art Film Co. Mr. Cooke's violin solo, "Saint D'Amout," was excellently rendered during this picture and was highly appreciated. "Bablas inherits a Panther" concluded the first portion of the programme. This picture cait unquestionably be claimed as the most huinorovi.: i comic subject ever presented to the public of New Plymouth, and evoked roars of laughitcr from start to finish. "Fight'ing Hope," a. bright and tuneful inarch. was played in.Hp-.top style by the Royal Orchestra. Part ,2 opened with some gorgeously colored scenes of the Solomon Isles, followed by "Dick Lightfingers." am amusing detective comedy-drama. Next came the star-attraction of the evening, "The Squatter and the Clown." Whilst the title of this) picture was being scTeenedi the orchestra commenced playing "Simple Avim," which set the eiAire iUtdienco humbling,and whistling. Mr. Cooke excelled! himself in this beautiful violin solo. 'TWo Squatter and the Clown" rirhved' to' be an entirely new type <xf drama', which soon had the audience'* sympathy for the clown. The plot of this picture has already appeared in these columns'. ''Rocked bv Influence" was another one of those fine comedies by M. Prince, the King of French comedians, which was accompanied by"Royal Trumpeters," in which Mr. Richards' cornet solo made the theatre ring. "The Shyness of Shorty'; is a cowboy drama sowemhat above the average quality. The same, programme will be screened t.o'-»morrow (Tuesday) evening. No picture* will be shown at the theatre this evenintr, owing to the theairc. Ixving otherwise engaged'. On Wednesday a new scries of all the latest pictures will lie screened.

The best items were two star pictures by the American Biograph Co. entitled'"A Trim for Santa Clans" and "A Wreath of Orange Piloxsoms." The popularity of Stvnndcrs' Pictures is evidently trained by Ihe uni(|ue variety of the film-makers represented on each programme. On Saturday'* nroprriinimc.no less than eleven .different, makers' production* were screened, prominent amongst the number Ibciu'.' "Kdisrai," "American Biograph," rVit-igra.ph C 0.." ".'Lubin Film Manufacturing C 0.," "Gaumont," "Eclair.," "Ess|nav Film Manufacturing C 0.," and I "'Psvlho Freros." To-night's change of programme again numbers productions from ten of -the world's star film studios. The new films for to-nitrbt are: "Oxford, and Cambridge Boat Race" (B. and C. film). "Pathe flazette. 113." "Winter Flowers" (colored Caumont film). "Trooping the Colors" (P.. and C. film). The star dramas are: "Coward or Tfero" (Vitngraph filial. "Mexican Filibusters" (Kalcin film.), "Event-nil Eveninc" (Edison film). "Cast up bv the Deep" (VitagranU film). The ' comedies include "Sfilmltz has Small-Pox" (Lubin film), "The Bouquet" (Essnny film). "Tweedledum is Late" (Ambro-io film), and "When TUlv's Uncle Flirted" (TTepwix film). Tn addition to this programme the management expect to receive the "Coronation Pictures" by the mail train-to-night, and if to hand in time will screen same, in the second half of the progriunme.
