A Press Association wire from London states that the Prince of Wales has been appointed a midshipman on H.M.S. IKndustait. A cablegram from Rome states that the Pope is ill, ovcr-excrtion aggravated by the heat having caused laryngitis. His respiration is difficult. Mr. E. Snowball leaves to-nigh* for Auckland, en route for Mamaku, Rotorua. where lie assumes the managership of tho Mountain Riinu Timber Company.
We learned from Dr. Fookes at midnight that the condition of the Mayor, who underwent a critical operation at the hospital on Friday, is satisfactory, he having spent a good day yesterday.
ilr. .T. C. .Sumner and Mrs. Sumner have returned from a trip bo Wie Old Country. Mr. Sumner readied New Plymouth on Saturday, but Mrs. .Sunnier is staying a few days in Wellington. Francis McParlamd. licensee of tihe Hotel Cecil, died at Wellington on Saturday, aged seventy-one years. He was fonnerly a resident of 'Westland, and was chairman of the Wellington Ji censed Victuallers' Association.
Private letters report that Bishop Wallis arrived in England much benefitted by tflie sea voyage, but doctors advise tliat lie must take great care, and even forbade ham going to London during Coronation time. It is probable that he will have to live generally in the country, not undertaking much work. The Bishop himself, however, writes very cheerily, and evidently is much stronger than lie was.
