The residence of Mr J. W. Shepherd, at Glen Inncs (N.S.W.), hurst into flames one night last week. The inmates were Mr Shepherd, his wife, and nine children. Mrs Shepherd had only a few hours previously given birth to a child. The husband was frightfully burnt in removing his wile and infant child from the burning building. After getting tlieui to a place of safety he returned and rescued two of his children who were left in the house. He accomplished this, but not before the girl had nearly all her hnir burnt off her head, besides being otherwise burnt about the body. Mr Shepherd was in agony as the'result of his injuries. His wife, lies in a 'precarious condition. Candle Ends,—Melt cnndlo ends in a jar and mis with turpentine in exactly the same proportion as you would if using beeswax. The wax of candle ends answers the same purpose as bees wax, and the result is an excellent polish. Candle ends placed on top of the sticks when laying a fire will help to make it burn up quickly, or pieces of wax scraped from the candlesticks and placed in a piece of paper answer the same purpose
