The riot in the Rhondda Valley was lue to the Ely pit authorities utilising iremen and colliery officials to per:orm work usually allotted to colliers. The fighting on the hillside lasted ;hree hours. The rioters rolled boulders )n to the advancing policemen, thirty of vhom were injured.
