NEW THEATRE FOR WELLINGTON. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Wednesday. The directors of the Wellington Opera House Co. have secured the option of the purchase of a portion of Mr. T. G. McCarthy's valuable section in Manners street in the vicinity of the Royal Oak Hotel, and will shortly ask the shareholders to sanction an increase in the capital to £70,000 for the purpose of erecting a theatre to seat 1000 people. The directors have consulted the Hon. Mr. Pitt, of Melbourne, who has designed several large theatres in Australia, with reference to the design for tho proposed new opera house. An effort will be made to open the theatre next year on the expiry of Mr. J. C. Williamson's lease of the present Opera House. It is estimated that the directors' venture will involve an expenditure of about £BO,OOO.

WAIHI MINERS' TROUBLE. Waihi, Wednesday. The dispute between the miners and companies relative to the payment of winding engineers was discussed last night at a mass meeting. On the advice of the Federation a ballot was taken whether the agreement which was the outcome of the recent conference should be rejected or signed.

The ballot resulted in favor of the signing by a majority of flB out of 879.

Mr. P. H. Hickey (Blackball) was chosen by the meeting as the workers' candidate in the Ohinemuri general election.
