Mr. Hughes, referring to a statement made by the chairman of the Steamship Owners'. Association, said that if the waterside workers refused to handle nonunion sugar the trouble would extend round the coast and be a worse strike than that of 1890. He said he desired to prevent such a calamity, and would leave no step untaken to prevent ii But there was something very rotten in the state of thing which permitted a great company to draw huge dividends and yet decline to pay such rates for its cane as would enable growers to pay decent wages to their men.
