WAIWAKAIHO WEIR.

, To the Editor. ! Sir,—With reference to the construction of the weir across the river Waiwakaiho at Fitzroy, I might be permitted to give my notion of the possibility that a stratum of concrete, say, of about one foot or so thick, might have been laid or disposed over the boulders, wire netting and all, with a sort of "apron" work of stone and concrete sloping well to the bridge arches. Had this been done it might be supposed that the flood waters or torrents of the river would have slid up over the inclined backing of- the weir, and down the face of the concrete, without injuring it. Even logs might have been lifted and carried smoothly on to the sea, there being less obstruction offered by the concrete either to the flow of the water or the drifting of timber than by the looser boulder stones. How far such a scheme would have proved durable or faasible at a moderate cost I could not myself decide.—l am, etc., C.W.W.
