The Volkstem, returning to the charge in respect to the dominions' position in time of war, quotes Canadian newspapers in support of the neutrality proposition, and declares the Coronation festivities proved that South Africa is not lacking in loyalty. It is absurd, the paper says, that the Empire should be plunged in war simply because the Government of one portion happens to develop a quarrel. With some spirit, General Hertzog, speaking at Turkfontein, said there was no reason to resort to immigration to cope with danger from without and from within. The situation in South Africa was not like that in Australia and Canada. The nearest enemy was 7000 miles distant, and South Africa did not participate in European intrigues, nor was she concerned with European ambitions.
