SUGAR WORKERS' STRIKE.
MR. HUGIIES' ATTITUDE. By Cable —Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, July 21. Steamship owners will consider the position that has arisen in the sugar strike next week. It is considered unnecessary to take immediate action, as the large quantity of sugar lying at Queensland ports will still be shipped. There is much comment on Mr. Hughes' attitude. It is argued that he should either resign his position as Attorney-General or as president of the Waterside Workers' Federation. Mr. Hughes claims that the federation has not contravened the Federal Arbitration Act. It has not struck, and anyhow the Arbitration Court has jurisdiction only in disputes extending beyond one State. Directly anything arises involving an industrial dispute he will resign the presidency. A SIGNIFICANT POINT. Brisbane, July 21. No action has yet been taken by the waterside workers. It is considered significant in connection with the present situation that the new agreement between the steamship owners and the Waterside Workers' Federation has not yet been signed.
