Yesterday Dr. T. If. A. VaJint-ino, In-spector-General of Hospitals, accompanied by Mr. C. Owen, M.A, headmaster of the East Ohristchurch School, has been appointed to the .position of Inspector of Schools for the North Canterbury district, rendered vacant tlhrough the retirement of Mr. T. Mr. James Robert Johnston, one of the first settlers in the Cheltenham district, dropped down dead whilst walking round -the verandah of his house yesterday morning. He was 83 years of age and suffered from a weak heart. Deceased came from Victoria. He landed at Nelson and went to Canterbury, where he was one of Hie original directors of the New Zealand Fanners' Cooperative Association. He came to Cheltenham 20 years ago. He was for sonfe years a member of the Kiwitea County Council. He leaves a grown-up family.
