WIDOW OF FAMOUS MAN. By Gable —Press Association—Copyright. Received 15, 1 a.m. London, July 14. The widow of Sir James Outram is dead at the age of 99 years. LORD CRANBROOK. Received 15, 1 a.m. London, July 14. Earl Cranbrook (John Stewart Ga-thorne-Hardy) is dead; aged 72 years. He spent his early life in the army, retiring while still a lieutenant, although he became a colonel of Kentish Volunteers. He sat in the House of Commons for Rye and the County of Kent. The Hon. Captain Gathorne-Hardy, who was an aide-de-camp to Lord Plunket while he was Governor of New Zealand, succeeds to the title.

■MR. HAROLD STRANGE. London, July 12. The death is reported of Mr. Harold Strange, who was the principal witness in the Woolf Joel murder case, and a member of the Jameson Reform Committee of 1895.

Woolf Joel was shot at Johannesburg in 18!)S by a man named Veltheim, who called upon him to demand money. VelMieim pleaded that he had acted in self-defence, and on that ground was acquitted. He was, however, expelled from the Transvaal, which was then an independent Republic. He returned and was expelled a second time. Afterwards he was tried in London for an attempt to extort money from Solly Joel, Woolf Joel's brother, and was sentenced to twenty years' imprisonmeit.
