TRAMWAY REGULATIONS

A WELLINGTON PROTEST. By Telegraph—Presg Association. Wellington, Friday. The proposed tramway regulations were discussed by the City Council last night. The question was preceded by the question put by Councillor Fletcher, who a.sked on what authority a document from the Public Works Department marked ''confidential" was handed to a, reporter after the Trairiwayg Committee, had decided that the department be written to asking for the embargo "confindential" to be removed, failing which' the council would discuss the matter in an open meeting.

The Acting-Mayor stated that he gave the authority and was prepared to take any eensure regarding his action, which he thought w«a in the best interests of the public.

The Under-Secretary of Public Works Wrote stating that if the council could not regard the regulations a.s confidential, to return them to the Public Works Office. Denline with the general question, the Acting-Mayor stated that lie had called a conference of the principal municipalities of New Zealand for the 24th inst. Councillor Fletcher stated that if the regulations' were'given effect to they might as well hand over the tramways to the Government. He moved an emphatic protest at the unwarrantable Interference by the Government in connection with the issue of regulation's that will seriously affect the working of Hie tramways; and further, that united action be taken by the conference of (lie various tramway authorities with a view of eliminating or modifying the impracticable clauses in the regulations, the date of such conference to be held on the 24th inst. The motion was carried unanimously. The local bodies invited are Christchurch, Dunedin. Invercargill. Napier, Waiuriiini, Auckland, Miramar, and Karori.
