Dr. Pomare is in the district enquiring into the outbreak of typhoid at Puniho. A London cable states that Lord lusher has been operated upon for appendicitis, and is progressing favorably.
The Hon. Allan McLean is dead, after a long illness. Ho was formerly Premier of Victoria, and later joint Prime Minister of the Commonwealth with Sir George Reid, K.C.—Sydney cable.
The Rev. F. G. Evans, who had been in charge of the Hawera parish for some time, left this week on a visit to Tagmania. The Rev. Mr. Fortune, of Duiv edin, is succeeding Mr. Evans at Hfr wcra. >
The death is announced of Mr. William Caracius, of Patca, which occurred as the result of an; apoplectic seizure. Mr. Caradus was a very old resident, and had been employed by the Railway Department since the line to Hawera was opened. He was 52 years of age.
Mr. Truelove, of the Ngaerc Gardens, has just returned from an extensive trip through Australia, where he has secured a number of Australian animals and birds for his zoological collection which is growing npace, and the gardens form one of the most interesting pleasure resorts of Taranakl,
A big tangi is being held at Tui pa over the remains of Rewa Mokena (Anglice David Morgan), who died on Friday last (says the Te Aroha correspondent of the Auckland Star). Rewa was chief of the Ngatikoroponga tribe, which formerly owned Te Aroha and the surrounding country. He was •born there fifty-five years ago, and was educated at St. Stephen's, Panel]. He was a man highly thought of by pakehas, and of great influence with his own tribe. He was to have gone to England this year in connection with the Treaty of Waitangi, but his visit wa* postponed on the score of ill-health.
Mr. (.'. E. Lloyd, who was well-known in Stratford and who was prominent in bowling circles, left there some time ago for the purpose of proceeding to England, and though he was suffering from an incurable malady, it was thought that lie would be able to reach England and see his friends before bifl death; but MrS. H.James has now been advised by cablegram that Mr. Lloyd passed away on shipboard near Rio de Janeiro, and was buried at sea. Mr. Lloyd learnt before leaving New Zealand that a considerable fortune had been left to him by the death of a relative. He had intended on arrival in England to try the radium cure for hift internal trouble.—Post.
