SMALL GROCERS PROTEST
ACAIXST EARLY CLOSING HOURS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A deputation of small grocers waited on Mr. Millar and complained of the action of grocers in a large way of business endeavoring to have shops closed at IS p.m. The deputation declared that many of them signed the requisition owing to misrepresentation, and urged that if such an early hour was fixed most of the small grocers would bo compelled to go out of business. The Minister replied that if the majority of t hose in the trade signed a requisition asking for certain hours to be fixed he had no option but to gazette it. . A question also arose as to the position of the Chinese, many of whom had signed a couuter requisition to that promulgated by the large shopkeepers. Mr. Millar stated that a Chinese haij no right to sign a requisition as a grocer unless grocery was their particular trade. However, he would make full enquiries into the position.
