TEMPERANCE CAMPAIGN. By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. A successful temperance campaign was brought to an enthusiastic close with a women's crusude meeting to-night. On Sunday temperance messages were given in nearly every church in the Napier district. Mrs. Barton, of Glasgow, and the Rev. J. 'Dawson were the special campaign speakers. Canon Mayne, as chairman at one of the mf"tings, warmly advocated an aggressive temperance effort.

TLUARU NEWS. Timaru, Last Night. A pioneer farmer named Michael Gaffaney, of Arowbenua, died today, aged 75. He was a native of Derbyshire; came to New Zealand in 1858, and worked for ill'.. Rhodes at Levels for some yeans. He was the first man to drive a horse team to the Mackenzie country, and the first to put a plough into the Levels plain. He brought up a very large family. A Unitarian Church has been established here with a membership of seventy. The Rev. J. H. G. Chappie has been appointed minister. The Education BoaTd to-day discussed briefly a budget of correspondence against the conduct of Bible lessons in the main school and the headmaster's reply to the charge. Some members considered the matter a storm in a teacup. but passed a resolution e:intionmg teachers not to interfere "officially" in Bible lessons. ARBOR DAY. Dunedin, Last Night. At a meeting to-night of headmasters and others interested in education, it was resolved to make arrangements for the celebration of Arbor Day this year, with a view to continuing its observance in future years. It was further resolved to observe the day on August 9. EDISON STORAGE CARS. Gisborne, Last Night.

At a meeting of the Borough Council to-night it was decided tv order two Edis«n storage battery cars as a first instalment for the proposed tramway system. In oil probability a further two cars will be ordered should the first provo to be satisfactory. The delivery of the first order is expected inside six months.
