Earthquake shocks lasting twelve minutes did damage at Kloskemet aggregating £IOO,OOO. No buildings remained intact. Many were injured by collapsing walls. Several women went mad, and were taken to the asylum. A fissure opened outside the town and emitted hot mud and sulphur. Elsewhere a peasant and his nine children were killed. Little damage was done at Budapest, but there was a great panic, and thon- . sands rushed into the streets in their night attire and gazed at Ihe houses expecting them to topple. Many spent the night in the streets. The inmates of the asylum were fre'ifcied, and struggled fearfully. The nurses put many into straight waistcoate.
