Mr. J. G. Harkness was in New Plymouth yesterday. The Hon. Sir G. Maurice Q'Rorke's re-appointment to the Legislative Council is gazetted. A Sydney cablegram reports that the Rev. Mr. Richards, an Anglican minister, dropped dead while travelling in a tram-car.
A Sydney press table states that the Rev. James Adam, one of the oldest Presbyterian Ministers, and a pioneer of the western districts, is dead. Mr. S. Bolton, chairman of the Pahiatua County Council, announces himself as an Opposition candidate for the Pahiatua 'seat at the general election.
Mr. Barney Levy, touring manager for George Marlowe, Ltd., was in New Plymouth yesterday making preparations for the visit of "The Bad Girl of the Family," who will disport herself and introduce a company of 38 people before local theatre-goers on Tuesday 18th inst.
Colonel Chaytor, officer commanding the Wellington military district, of which Tarannki forms part, will 'visit New Plymouth next Wednesday to bold a practical examination of officers, and also to meet the Taranaki Agricultural Society's executive in reference to the proposal to erect a combined agricultural and drill hall.
Mr. F. W. Penny, of Paeroa, has been appointed secretary of tile Manawatu A. and P. Association. There were 113 applicants, and these were reduced to three, viz.. .Messrs. Pennv, H. F. Gibson, of Oamaru, and L. '\V. llarlev, of ChnsteJmrch. Of these Mr. Pennv' was chosen at a special meeting of the association finance committee yesterday. —Press wire.
Mr. Joseph Thomas, of Ngaere, has received the sad intelligence of the death of his youngest son, Walter, aged about 22 years. leased left for a holiday m the Wairarapa about a fortnight ago, and as no word had been received of any illness, the news of his death came as a great shock. Walter Thomas (the Stratford Post says) received his educational training'in the Stiatford school, and lie was also a recognised all-round athlete. He was a. brother to Mr. Joe Thomas, first assistant at the Stratford school. The deputy-Mayor, Mr. G. W. Browne, headed a deputation yesterday afternoon to Mr. Charles Taylor, of the TaylorCarniigton Dramatic Co., to express then tillanks to him and his company ior gratuitously coming to New I'lymouth and giving a benefit to Mr. Fred Stephens. Mr. Browne said it had occurred to him that Mr. Taylor would sooner be thanked in private than before the footlights. Mr. Taylor said that tins -was undoubtedly so. He said it gave him great pleasure to assist his old acquaintance, Mr. Stephens. Tt wa* the first benefit of the kind he had given, but the ease was one of the most deserving that had come under his notice.
