FIRE AT HOBART. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Hobart, July 0. A fire destroyed Fitzgerald's large soft goods warehouse. Grant and Atkins' printery and several adjoining premises were damaged by fire and water. The damage is not stated, but lit will amount to many thousands. The insurances total £45,000. RAIX IX NEW SOUTH WALES. Sydney, July 0. The extended dry spell has broken, and useful rains are falling. PENNY POSTAGE. Melbourne, July G. The Postmaster-General is negotiating with 'the United States with a view to the establishment of penny postage between Australia and America. SUGAR WORKERS' STRIKE. Brisbane, July 0. The sugar workers' strike is spreading, and two more mills have ceased work. STATE LTIIE QUARRY. Sydney, July G. The Government has stated that the State lime quarry will be worked by day labor.

The cruiser King Alfred leaves Portsmouth next month with relief crews for the Australian squadron. NEWCASTLE'S COAL, TRADE. Newcastle, July fi. The trade returns for the past six months show a 'good increase on the previous corresponding period. The total value of coad exported was £905,000, against £701,000. New Zealand took 101,037 tons, compared with !>9,4R9 tons.
