. DRAWING A REVOLVER. By Telegraph—Prc6S Association. Auckland, Tuesday. In the Police Court a seafaring man, William West, was charged with having presented a revolver at David Gallagher in Queen street, Gallagher staled he saw accused presenting a revolver at another man, and he interfered, when k* vu knocked down and kicked. For the defence it was stated that West had been attacked by a 1111 über of men, and he drew a revolver in self-defence. He mistook Gallagher for one of his assailants. He was warned and fined 10s and costs.

1 PUBLIC BATHS FOR LEVIN. Levin, Tuesday. A public meeting of citizens at Levin last week affirmed the desirableness of erecting public baths at Levin at a cost of £SOO, contingent on a £SOO Government subsidy being available. Last night the Borough Council again considered the proposal and threw it out by a majority of six to four. An amendment to raise Levin's share of the expenditure by public subscriptions was also rejected by the council. An independent effort is being made to-day to raise £250 by public subscription. Up to noon £OO had been subscribed. FOXTOX HARBOR., , Levin, Tuesday. Endeavours are being made in various surrounding counties to obtain a guarantee from various specified districts towards the cost of acquiring the Foxton wharves from the Government for the Foxton Harbor Board. The Levin Borough Council discussed the matter last night on the proposal to guarantee £25 per annum on account ofl the necessary expenditure of £27,000, but resolved to defer voting until further information waß available. AX INTERESTING CASE. Wellington, Tuesday. Dr. McArthur, S.M., gave judgment to-day in the case in which the WelTimber Merchants' Industrial Union of Employers proceeded against the Prouse Lumber Co., Ltd., to recover £53 for moneys alleged to be due for timber levies and fines, in accordance with the rules of the union. The magistrate held that the agreement entered into was one that was in restraint of trade, and therefore, illegal. Judgment was for defendant without costs.

THE PRICE OF BUTTER. Wangamti, Tuesday. Butter is retailing, as was predicted a few weeks ago, at Is Gd ])«.■ r lb., and even at that price supplies are short. Enquiries have been made all over the "Dominion, hut only a limited quantity is procurable. A ' few thousand boxes are in the freezer at Auckland, but the quantity is evenly distributed amongst merchants. It is expected that, the present shortage of supplies will 'last for the next five or six weeks, till ths new cows begin to come in. TATTEIISALL'S SWEEPS. Christehurch, Tuesday. An intcres ting case was before the Magistrate's Court this morning, when James Simpson was charged with a breach of the Gaming Act ,by buying tickets in a prohibited lottery. Simpson and a friend 'had scut money for tickets in Tatte/sall's sweep, and won the second prize of £ 1800. Then a dispute arose as to the division of the money, and that is how the police camfi to be interested. The Magistrate suggested that a good many people in New Zealand might be prosecuted 011 similar charges, perhaps including some of the. police. The Chief Detective agreed, and said the difficulty was to get satisfactory evidence. ' Simpson was fined 40s and costs, tile -Magistrate expressing the hope that he would take good care of the money he had got so illegitimately.

THE PELOTAS ENQUIRY. "Wanganui, Tuesday. The finding was delivered this morning in tin 1 Pelotas case. The Court found that the accident was due to an unexpected fresh in the river, of which no warning had been sent to the pilot, and the insufficient power under these circumstances of the lighter which wa> towing the Pelotas. The certificates of all the officers were returned and no order made as to costs. No blame attached to the, pilot or the Harbor Board, but it was recommended that in future advice n> Hoods up the river be sent to the pilot.
