OLD AGE PENSIONS. By Cable. —Press Association— Copyright Melbourne, July 4. A return shows that old age and invalid pensions cost the Commonwealth 1 £2,085,000 annually. The old age pensioners number 76,089, and invalid pensioners 7310. THE NORTHERN TERRITORY. Melbourne, July 4. The returns show that the total area •f the Northern Territory is 315.117,000 acres. Only 474,000 have been alienated, and, excepting township allotments, most of the alienated lands are within fifty miles of Port Darwin.

TOTAL ABSTINENCE IN VICTORIA. Melbourne. July 4. The annual report of the' Total Abstinence Society stated that in two years charges of drunkenness had been reduced by nearly one-eighth. The total spent in Victoria on alcoholic liquors in 1900 was £4,005,571, a decrease of £91,239 compared with the previous year.

SUGAR WORKERS' STRIKE. Brisbane, July 4. Mr. Tudor, Minister for Customs, has returned from his visit to the sugar districts. He fears that the trouble ■will prove serious. Brisbane, July 4. The year's revenue was £5,320,008, an increase of £200,755. The expenditure was £5,314,736, an increase of | £801,158 compared with the previous year. , ~ SYDNEY GOVERNMENT HOUSE. Sydney, July 4. A meeting, at ivhich the Lord Mayor presided, adopted a resolution against the proposed abolition of the Federal Government House at Sydney. A committee was appointed to interview the State Government on the matter.

LIBERAL REFORMS. Sydney, July 4. The resolutions adopted at the Conference of the Liberal Reform Association favored the municipalization ot hospitals, preferential voting, and that consideration be extended under the Early Closing Act to shopkeepers' not employing shop assistants.
