THE RIVERINA.
VICTORIA CLAIMS IT FROM NEW SOUTH WALES.
By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Sydney, July 3.
The Victorian Attorney-General has notified the Premier of New South Wales that it is the intention of Victoria to claim the Riverina. The claim reached Sydney on Saturday, the day on which the sixty years term expired within which it is alleged an appeal against the validity of the present boundary is permissible. It is understood that the action of the Victorian Government, which will be followed by proceedings in the. High Court, is the outcome of a discovery iradc by the Victorian law authorities during a search of th? records. The discovery consists of a letter written by Sir Thomas Mitchell, Surveyor-Gen-eral at the time of the separation of New South Wales from Victoria, giving the warning that if the Hume river, the present boundary, was fixed upon against the facts of the case and against the intention of the Imperial Parliament, trouble was sure to ensue. He even predicted that it would result in civil war. It is claimed that this letter was completely ignored in fixing the boundaries.
A PERTINENT QUESTION. Received 4, 9.25 p.m. Sydney, July 4. In the Assembly Mr. Wade asked if it was true the Victorian Government had lodged a claim for the Riverina; also if the information leading to the claim had been found by a Victorian officer while allowed to search the New South AVales on another matter. Mr. Holman answered that he believed so. Mr. Wade asked if the use of the information under the circumstances was not a breach of confidence. Mr. Holman promised to lay the papers on the table of the House.
