i Mil. IIASSKY AT HASTINGS. By Telegraph- Association. lli'-ij.iags, Last Night. Mr. Massey addieijged a crowded meeting and received a welcome to-night. ■ He said his visit was 1 in view of the approaching "onera; /lection, and he laid before the imiii'iicij ihe political position from the Opposition standpoint. He stated that the Government had been so long in power that a number of abuses had grown up which required to be remedied, and he hoped the people would give their attention to public affairs during the uext few months. He said one of the curses of New Zealand at the present time was government by patronage. He made heated replies to Sir J. Carroll's recent criticisms of his (Mr. Massey's) speeches. He (Mr. Massey) would stand by his figures, because they were taken from a Government source, which probably Sir J. Carroll had never seen. He would say to Sir J. Carroll that if the natives were to be saved it would be by the gospel of work, not by the gospel of "taihoa." "The man who had done the most harm to New Zealand," said the speaker, "was that same Sir J. Carroll, and .but for him all the native lands would be occupied by a prosperous people, and the natives would become useful citizens." The remainder of his speech was on the same lines as that delivered in other places.
