CARPENTERS' AWARD. By Telegraph— Press Association. Wellington, Monday. The Arbitration Court's award in the carpenters' disputo provides for a , week's work of 45 hours, and a minimum [ •wage of Is 4%d an hour. Piece-work is prohibited, except in respect of stairbuilding. The union sought to obtain a 40 hours' week and a minimum wago of Is B<l an hour. Most of the terms in the award are, however, based on the provisions of the last award. A TEST CASE. In the test case brought by the Inspector of Awards against a local firm of grocers for keeping their premises open on Wednesday, the day of the statutory half-holiday, in a week in which there was another holiday. Judgment was given for defendants, with costs. Defendants worked their assistants on Wednesday, May 31. The anniversary of the Birthday of the King was on Saturday in the same week, and defei>dants gave their assistants a holiday on that day. The question at issue was whether in the circumstances defendants were guilty of a breach of the award.
