A WORTHY CAUSE.

To the Editor. I Sir, —I was very pleased to notice in your issue pf June 27 an appeal on behalf! of Dr. liarnardo's Homes. 1 have been I waiting to see if some abler person would second your appeal, but as no reply Ims been made, 7 am afraid, like other efforts, it is doomed to failure. Being an annual subscriber to the Homes and also a supplier to -a dairy factory, and hearin? from the majority of suppliers at. our general meetings of the splendid herds that nearly all have and the big cheques received from the same, I thought surely they would try and spare a small sum of one shilling each per annum for an object that T think we might say the founder of the institution really parted with his life's blood for. With the manager's permission, a month before an annual meeting, T wrote out | seven appeals, one for each creamery, anil one for the main factorv. giving full assurance that every penny should be acknowledged from London after two months' waiting. I went to see how it succeeded, when T received the sum of three shillings, one shilling from the village blacksmith, one from the storeman, and one from the secretary of the factory, but from suppliers not, one penny. On another occasion 1 was working with and for a gentleman, a member of a church, who was fishing for church funds. I told him T could not give a large sum, as my sympathy was with these destitute children. Also I thougnt 1 didn't get imposed upon. Mo believed it was a grand and worthy object, and if ever lie were in a position to subscribe he would do'\so. The question is. when shall we have raked up sullicient of this world's goods to be able to subscribe to such a charity? it I were in a position to offer tnat gentleman eight thousaiiu pounds for his possessions I should expect to be dubbed a cheat lor trying to purchase at an undervalue. Apologising for troubling you, I am, etc.. n A WORKING MAX.
