MARINE INQUIRY.

STRANDING OF THE PELOTAS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wangauui, Last Night. Mr. F. V. Fraser and Captains Post and Grey (assessors) sat to-day to enquire into the recent stranding of the luirqucntine Pelotas. The evidence showed that the vessel lmd been towed over the bar by the freezing company's lighter Thistle, and when nearing the. entrance to the river, a heavy fresh overpowered the lighter, the captnin of which shouted to the captain of the Pelotas that he would have to tow him to sea again. This was tried, but when the vessels reached the end of the mole, the current carried the Pelotas ashore.

At the enquiry to-day, both masters and the pilot were of opinion that everything was done to prevent disaster. The question was raised as to whether it would not have been better to dropped anchor when the current became too strong. Opinion was divided, some witnesses thinking such a course would have been useless as the anchors would not have held.

The Court gives judgment in the morning.
