The University llugby match was played in fine though cold weather before an- attendance of 5000. In the first half there was dull straggling play, with occasional 'good forward rushes. The backs on both sides showed want of combination. The spell ended Sydney 5, New Zealand 3. , On resuming the New Zealand forwards attacked strongly and had their heavier opponents in difficulties, and ret versed the position, though they were ? not supported by the backs. For New Zealand Faire (2), Quilliam (2) and Curtayne scored tries, none of which, were converted. They were mostly angle shots.
j THE NORTHERN UNION GAME. NEW ZEALAND 24 v. QUEENS- l LAND 13. Received 2, 5.5 p.m. Brisbane, July 2. The weather was fine, and there was an attendance of six thousand. The i opening stages favored Queensland, the New Zealanders lacking combination, and being kept defending for the first ten minutes. The New Zealanders, however, played into form, and towards the close of the first half showed splendid combination, their passing and dribbling rushes completely beating the Queenslanders. Infringement of the rules lost the visitors several tries. In the second half the game was very fast and exciting, but free from roughness. New Zealand scored two tries in quick succession as a result of brilliant combined play. The last quarter of an hour was very even, both sides showing great combination. Asher's knee gave way, and Cotterell replaced him. At half-time the score was: New Zealand 13, Queensland 3. The final score was: New Zealand 24 (tries scored by Dunning (2). Savoury, Woodward, and Francis, three being converted by Seager, who also kicked a goal from the field), Queensland 13. WANCANUI BEATS TARANAKI.

The first representative match of the 5 season under Northern Union rules was played here on Saturday in glorious weather and before a very f air attendance of the public. The Taranaki team, which iiiciuded several emergencies, was beaten after an attractive game by 19 points to 8. |
