FOOTBALL

THK SATURDAY COMPETITION. Oil Saturday afternoon the matchei in the Saturday competition were continned in excellent weather. United played Rovers, and added another to its unvaried list of defeats, but scored its first try of the season. Star beat Okato. \ ROVERS (26) v. UNITED (3).

Rovers and United mustered fair teams on the Recreation Grounds, United evidently benefiting from the rally of members a couple of nights previously. A new player was noticeable in their ranks, a rather clever AVanganui back named Watson. Rovers set the ball going. United set up a dangerous attack, and the Greens (the majority of the Hovers wore green and white jerseys) were kept busy deiending. Taeties were hard to follow at times, for there were hine and white jerseys on both sides, blue, black -and- gold, and other colors in the United ranks. Anyhow, Kisliy benefited from this, if benefit there could be, for early in the game he gathered in and dodged over the line, scoring United's first try of the season. The kick at goal was wretched. Watson came near scoring another try for "colors/' but was surrounded —one woidd hardly say obstructed—and Rovers forced. Guuson failed to catch a-long kick from the Rovers' ranks, and Thomson cut in. Ryder dashed down the field and scored, hut his kick was a failure. 3—3. Rovers did some passing, and got into United's twenty-five, but a pass was intercepted, and the fight was continued in midfield, where Potts was penalised for a glaring piece of off-sfdo play. Kisliy got in a smart run, but, as on many other occasions, had no idea of when to get rid of the ball, and presently United was defending hard, Martin just corning in time to save his side from a score which seemed certain when the full-back missed badly. Lan Grant made a great run from his own twenty-five, passing through the greater part of the United team, and scored a soft try, the attempts to tackle (being ludicrously weak. No goal. !)—3. Following up a long kick, Grant Tertius (Eric), who can scamper as fast as his brothers, notched a try, which was also unconverted. 12 —3. A minute later Jennings repeated the dose. 1.5—3. A nice bit of passing between Thompson, Alf and Eric J Grant gave the last-named another try, Ryder's excellent kick just missing. The game was a bit of a procession for the Grants- now; i;i u All- ::corod. No goal; Footwork was so poor tliroughdut "that/, a nice piece of dribbling by Ryder came as a great joy, and it'landed the ball on the right side of the goal line for Rvder. 'Ellis goaled. There was little time' left,: and the game ended with the score: Rovers 20, United 3.

STAR (0) v. OKATO (3). Stars took a weak team to Okato. and won by the narrow margin of fi points to'".?. The hack division was composed mainly of forwards, and the forwards were not the regular lot. The first spell was fairly even. Okato notched the first points, Bruce Anderson scoring a try. Hill scored a try in the first spell, too. neither being converted. The spell ended with the scores 3—all. A heavy shower made the ball greanv for the rest of the game. Pfankuch scored Star's winning try.
