ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
END OF A DRINKING BOUT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Ssaturduiy. Arthur John Stanfield, a remittance man, aged 47 years, died a ML Eden oyer the effects of a drinking bout. Deceased was well connected in the Old Country, and at one time practised as a solicitor in England. MAORI WOMAN KILLED. Christchurch, Saturday. A Maori woman, Mere Terei, aged 41, met her death under peculiar circumstances at Taumutu, Lake Ellesmcre, yesterday; Operations for letting out the surplus waters of the lake were in progress, and a strong scour was running through the culverts. The woman intended to cross the culvert, but the bank gave way, and she was sucKed down into a deep hole and suffocated with sand and water. It took a gang of men three hours to recover the body.
