A WHITE NORTH
The main object of the scientific expedition which has left Sydney for the Northern Territory, and of the larger expedition which it is hoped will go over the same ground later on, is to find whether and under what conditions white men can live in North Australia." The investigations of these expeditions may show whether Australia can, be kept whito all over. Professor Baldwin Spencer and lessor Gil-ruth, ■ the Victorian members of the expedition, reached Sydttty by the Melbourne express. With Dr. Woolnough, of the Sydney University, they left by the Dutch packet-steamer Van Waerwyck. Dr. Breinl, director of the Institute of Tropical Medicine at. Town* ville, joins them there. The party, will tnen go northward and round to Port Darwin. It will return again to Port Essington, where Professor Gilruth is to make investigations as to cattle diseases. The party will then go back again to Port Darwin, south by rail_to Pine Creek, and on as far as Catherine river following >the overland telegraph line and finally across country to the mouth of the Roper river. "Our investigations," said Professor Baldwin. Spencer, "will be preliminary to those of the larger expedition which we hope will go over the ground afterwards. We shall be making collections the whole time, including microscopical preparations of the blood of different animals, so as to investigate human and stock diseases. Our principal object ia to show the relationship of whites to life in the Northern Territory. •'Our observations on this expedition will probably give us some idea as. to what further work could with advantage be carried out on a larger scale later o«y It has been proposed, if the second i»W pedition goes out, that its work undertaken by members of staffs of'the various ties.
